Why Exams Aren’t As Bad As You Think

Ah, that time of year is upon us…

And sadly, I’m not referring to the beautiful weather! The sun might be shining, but most of us Lakehead students are cooped up in our rooms, studying for exams! I have 2 out of 6 exams left, I can almost taste freedom!

It’s safe to say that exams are probably one of the most difficult times of the year for University students. I will admit that exam time can be stressful for all of us. However, there are several reasons why exams aren’t as bad as you think they are.

  1. Chances are, you’ve already been tested on at least half of the material. Whether it be a midterm, quiz, or assignment, you’ve probably already been tested on a lot of it! That means you (hopefully) already know some of the material, and don’t need to study as hard. And when you do study, it’ll come back to you quickly!
  2. If you kept up in class, studying won’t be super painful. My biggest tip (which is probably obvious) is DO NOT procrastinate. I know it’s hard… but it’ll pay off in the long run! If you have your notes already written or typed out, all you’ll have to do is review (and practice)! I learned this one the hard way, and you probably will, too.
  3. You’re done classes! At Lakehead, our exam time occurs after classes are finished. That means that you won’t have to worry about heading to class, and you can focus on studying. Assignments are usually finished by exam time, as well.
  4. If you manage your time, you will feel confident, not overwhelmed! By beginning to study a week or so before the exam, you won’t have to cram. This means you will be more confident and prepared.
  5. In general, professors aren’t out to make the exams super difficult. Of course, this can be dependent on the professor, but I really haven’t had any professors that made the exams super difficult — they aren’t out to make you fail! Exams are generally cumulative (or since the midterm) so they try to put the basics on them, not the super difficult details. If you know your basics, you should just fine!
  6. A sense of accomplishment. There is no better feeling that stepping out of a difficult exam and saying “I nailed it.” And even if you didn’t, it’s over! You are one exam closer to summer, and can put away one binder or textbook! It’s an awesome feeling of accomplishment, especially when you’ve been studying so hard!
  7. You’ve done them before. Most high schools have exam periods, too. You’re used to doing exams and studying! Don’t stress, you know what you’re doing!

So whether you’ve procrastinated last minute or feel like you’re going to ace it, don’t stress! Exams really aren’t the end of the world, and summer is literally a few weeks away! Study, get through it, and then you can sleep for a week straight!
