Student Appreciation Week!

This week was Student Appreciation Week at Lakehead and it was a blast!  Between awesome sales at the bookstore, free food, colouring, helpful seminars, and all sorts of activities, it was an exciting time around campus! To be honest I didn’t even know it was student appreciation until someone ran up to me on Tuesday and gave me a free blue-icing persian (which is by the way a delicious Thunder Bay dessert/donut!).
Here are some highlights from the week!

Naturally, I couldn’t help but go and check things out. Some nice girl also gave me a free coffee coupon in the Regional Centre when I was eating my lunch!

To be honest, the week after reading week (which was last week) is always crazy, and I think Student Appreciation is on this week for a reason! I mean, who doesn’t love a little free pizza in between studying for four midterms and writing two papers?

Friday was definitely my favourite day this week! Not only was I done all my midterms, but I also worked at the bookstore. Friday was Random Acts of Kindness Day – we at the bookstore were each given a $25 gift card to give out to a student at the bookstore! The guy I gave mine too was pretty excited, as he was buying a textbook! Staff also went around campus today buying students their lunches and coffees. There was not missing how excited everyone was!

Friday in the Agora there was also a colouring table (stress relief, anyone?) and a cool wall covered in hearts – written on them were things that people were thankful for, loved, or why they loved Lakehead! My favourite was the “I love Persians!” heart. There was also a giveaway draw for $500. Yes please.

Some awesome deals at the bookstore (and yeah, that’s a blanket that feels like a sweatshirt!):

Overall it was an awesome week – even though midterms, tests, and assignments had all us tearing our hair out. I love that Lakehead does stuff like this and tries to make it easier on us students. The fact that we were able to participate in Random Acts of Kindness Day was definitely the highlight of my week. I wish I would have gotten more pictures – but quite frankly, my blue persian and all the events were too exciting that I totally forgot!

Follow Me Around The Bookstore!

Come follow me around the Lakehead University bookstore this week! Not only do you purchase your textbooks here but we also have a ton of Lakehead swag, stationary, and souvenirs! Also, did I mention that the campus bookstore is a great place for a student job? I’ve been working here since the beginning of the year, and it’s a really nice atmosphere, with great people and a generally relaxing workload!

First thing’s first, the books! Your textbooks really aren’t hard to find. The aisles are in alphabetical order by faculty (Anthropology, Engineering, Nursing, etc.) and every class has their own tag depicting the course name/number, and what textbooks are required for that class.

We also have a variety of awesome faculty program t-shirts available… I’m pretty sure 95% (if not all) of our programs are represented! These are really awesome t-shirts for going to conventions and competitions, too!

Hi baby Wolfie!

Other than that, we’ve got a ton of Lakehead swag – from water bottles to t-shirts, sweat pants and PJs (because come on, what else do University students live in?), if you want something Lakehead we probably have it. We also have a ton of awesome Lakehead gear for mom and dad (Mother and Father’s Day, anyone?). My favourite is the bumper sticker that says “My Kid and My Money Go to Lakehead”. I am also slightly obsessed with our program hoodies (available in select programs) and Under Armour gear!

Walking Around This Hockey Town

The US has football, China has basketball, Europe has soccer. Here in Canada, our passion is hockey. And considering Thunder Bay has the highest per capita number of NHL players in Canada, it’s safe to stay that we are a huge hockey town.
Unlike some larger Canadian cities though, our home team is our University team. There is no missing the energy of walking into the Fort William Arena for another Thunderwolves game.

I won two tickets for the game last Friday night (against the Waterloo Warriors!), and we had a blast!

And what’s the hockey game without a little popcorn?!

Because our home team is our University team, you’ll find not only University students at the game, but also kids with their parents, seniors, teenagers having a fun night out! Oh, and did I mention I somehow managed to pick up a new boyfriend at the game? He’s a little hairy, and he kind of just sat beside me and put his arm around me… but who doesn’t love Wolfie?!

image16(is it just me or does his jersey look a little tight?! Maybe it’s all that popcorn…)

GO WOLVES! We won, 5-2. I’ll be honest… I’m not even a huge sports fan… but if there is any sport I love to watch, it’s live hockey. There is something so exhilarating about seeing your team score a goal right in front of you!

Student prices for a single-game ticket are just $8 (or $79.99 for full season) – I try to go to at least a game every year! It’s a lot of fun to go out to them, grab a bite to eat, and cheer on your local team! We always go out for appetizers after, and considering most games are on Friday and Thursday nights, it’s a great wind down to the week. I highly suggest going to see a Thunderwolves game – you won’t regret it!
